Let’s give 71-year-old Maie a warm and accessible home at last!

Dear friends! Maie, 71, from Viljandi County is a wonderfully cheerful woman who, despite a severe stroke and several other illnesses, is confined to a wheelchair and yet still tries to find joy in life.

We in the Naerata Ometi family have helped Maie before, but her greatest and most urgent problem – adapting her home for a wheelchair – is still unsolved.

The depth of the problem

Maie’s daily life is still full of obstacles that rob her of her dignity and put her health at risk. Imagine not being able to fit into your own toilet in your own home in a wheelchair. Imagine an icy wind blowing through the cracks in the washroom window, the floor tiles coming loose and water running over the threshold into the room. This is Maie’s everyday reality.

On top of that, Maie is essentially a prisoner in her own home. She has no safe ramps for getting in and out of the house, which means she cannot even go out for fresh air on her own.

The solution and the goal

Now is the time to finally get this work done, with your help. We must give Maie back her independence and her quality of life.

With your donation we will build the wooden ramps and the platform she so badly needs, so that she can finally get outside by herself. With your help we will fully renovate her toilet and shower room: widen the doorway, insulate the walls and window reveals, pour a new, level floor and install a new drain. All so that Maie has warmth, safety and room to move in her wheelchair.

Where exactly does your help go?

Maie’s modest pension goes entirely on medicines, disability services and food. Her grandchildren help her as much as they can, but they are not able to finance renovation on this scale. Although the local municipality has promised to help with some of the materials, the lion’s share of the costs is still uncovered.

Your donation goes directly towards carrying out these specific works and buying the materials. Everything listed below is still undone.

Work to be carried out:

• Enlarging the toilet doorway and moving the door
• Insulating the toilet wall
• Bringing the floors and thresholds to a single level
• Opening up and re-insulating the shower room window opening
• Removing the old shower room floor and building a new one (including new falls and drain)
• Insulating the exterior wall with rock wool
• Building the ramps and two platforms for wheelchair access

• Underfloor heating cable and sensor
• Wall tiles (6 m²), preferably rust-coloured
• Reinforcement mesh
• Concrete mix S-100 – 10 bags
• Polystyrene 5 cm (6 m²)
• A new floor drain
• Mosaic tiles – 5 pcs
• Floor tiles – 6 m²
• Rock wool 10 cm – 10 packs
• Plasterboard – 2 pcs
• Filler – 1 kg
• Wall paint – 1 kg
• Sandpaper
• Expanding foam (Makroflex) – 4 cans
• Insulating tape for the window
• Decking boards for the ramp and platform (1 m²)
• 5×15 cm timber beams (3 pcs, 5 m long)
• Wood screws 5×100 mm – 1 box
• Wood preservative
• Interior door, 90 cm wide
• Gravel, crushed stone and geotextile are fortunately already available.

The builder’s fee:

We have found a builder who is willing to carry out all of this substantial work at a friend’s price of 1000 euros. This cost also needs to be covered.
